Layover Time Calculator (Connection Feasibility)
Check if a flight connection time is realistic given airport type and immigration needs.
What this calculates
Airline minimum connection times (MCT) are often too tight — they assume on-time arrival and known shortcuts. This calculator estimates realistic minimum connection time based on whether you re-clear security, change terminals, or need immigration/customs.
Formula & how it works
MCT estimate = base + adjustments. Base same terminal domestic: 45 min. Different terminal: +30 min. International arrival to domestic: +60 min (immigration + bag claim + re-check). International to international: +30 min if no rechecking.
Worked example
London (LHR) arrival from US, connecting to Paris on same airline, different terminal. Base 45 + terminal 30 + intl-to-intl 30 = 105 min minimum. 2 hr layover = comfortable, 75 min = risky.
Frequently asked questions
Airline vs realistic MCT?
Airline MCT is what they'll sell; realistic is what experienced travelers want. United at ORD has 45 min MCT but most pros want 90+ for safety.
Schengen border?
If arriving from outside Schengen, you clear immigration at first Schengen airport. Onward Schengen flights are 'domestic' equivalent.
Missed connection?
Same airline (single ticket) rebooks for free. Separate tickets = you're on your own. Always book through one airline/alliance if tight.
