Steps to Distance & Calories Calculator
Convert daily step count to distance (km/mi) and approximate calories burned by walking pace.
What this calculates
Step counts are popular because every phone tracks them, but they're not directly comparable across people — a 5'2" person and a 6'4" person cover very different ground in 10,000 steps. This calculator translates your steps into actual distance and calories using stride length estimated from height.
Formula & how it works
Stride (m) ≈ height × 0.415 (walking), height × 0.484 (running). Distance = steps × stride. Calories ≈ steps × weight × 0.00045 (walking, kcal per step per kg).
Worked example
10,000 steps, 170 cm tall, 70 kg. Stride 0.706 m → 7.06 km (4.4 mi). Calories ≈ 315 kcal.
Frequently asked questions
Is 10,000 steps magic?
No — origin is a 1960s Japanese pedometer marketing campaign. Studies show benefits flatten around 7,500-8,000 steps for mortality reduction.
Why is my watch's count higher?
Hand swing, fidgeting, and arm gestures get counted. Hip-worn counts are usually 10-15% lower.
Calories accuracy?
±20%. Real burn depends on pace, terrain, body composition, and metabolism.
