What this calculates

Crypto profit and loss math is simple, but fees and the high price volatility make manual calculations error-prone. This calculator handles buy and sell legs separately with fees included, and shows your net profit, ROI, and break-even price. Useful for retroactive trade review or planning an exit price.

Formula & how it works

Buy cost = price_in × qty × (1 + fee_pct). Sell proceeds = price_out × qty × (1 − fee_pct). P&L = proceeds − cost. ROI = P&L ÷ cost × 100. Break-even price = buy_cost ÷ (qty × (1 − fee_pct)). Crypto exchange fees: 0.1-1.0 % per leg typical; 1.5 %+ on cards/credit-card buys.

Worked example

Buy 0.5 BTC at $40,000 with 0.5 % fee. Cost = 0.5 × 40000 × 1.005 = $20,100. Sell at $55,000 with 0.5 % fee. Proceeds = 0.5 × 55000 × 0.995 = $27,362.50. P&L = $7,262.50. ROI = 36.1 %. Break-even price = 20100 / (0.5 × 0.995) = $40,402 — need price above this to be profitable after fees.

Frequently asked questions

Is this taxable?

Yes in most jurisdictions. US: capital gains, short-term (under 1 year holding) at ordinary income, long-term at 0/15/20 %. UK, EU, AU, JP all tax crypto P&L. Track all trades or use software (Koinly, CoinTracker).

What about staking rewards?

Taxed as ordinary income in the US when received (at fair market value), then capital gains when sold. Different tax authorities differ. This calculator only handles spot trades.

How accurate are exchange fees?

Varies. Major exchanges (Coinbase, Kraken, Binance) 0.1-0.6 %. CEX cards/credit cards 2-4 %. DEX trades have gas fees plus protocol fees. Always check before trading large positions.

Does this work for leveraged trades?

Spot only here. Leveraged positions need funding rate, liquidation price, and other inputs. Use a perpetual P&L calculator for those — different math, different risks.
