GPA Target Calculator (Needed Term GPA)
Calculate the term GPA needed to hit a cumulative goal given current GPA and credits.
What this calculates
Knowing your cumulative GPA goal is one thing; figuring out what you need this term to get there is another. This calculator solves for the term GPA required given current cumulative GPA, completed credits, this term's credit load, and your target.
Formula & how it works
Cumulative_new = (current_GPA × current_credits + term_GPA × term_credits) ÷ (current_credits + term_credits). Solve for term_GPA: term_GPA = (target × (cur_credits + term_credits) − current_GPA × current_credits) ÷ term_credits.
Worked example
Current 3.2 over 60 credits, taking 15 this term, want cumulative 3.4. Term GPA needed = (3.4 × 75 − 3.2 × 60) ÷ 15 = (255 − 192) ÷ 15 = 4.2 — impossible on a 4.0 scale, so target needs to lower or take more terms.
Frequently asked questions
What if result > 4.0?
Target is unreachable in one term. Take more terms, or lower the target.
What if result is negative?
You already exceed the target — even failing this term keeps you above it.
+/− grades?
Most US schools use ±0.3 (e.g., A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3). Some use ±0.33; check your school.
