Essay Writing Pace Calculator
Calculate words per day needed to finish an essay by a deadline, accounting for current progress.
What this calculates
Procrastination math: pick the deadline, the target length, and what's already written. This calculator returns the daily word quota — and how many days are left to maintain it. Add a buffer day or two for editing; first drafts always need revision.
Formula & how it works
Days remaining = ceil((deadline − today) ÷ 1 day). Words remaining = target − written. Daily pace = ceil(words_remaining ÷ days_remaining).
Worked example
5,000-word essay, 1,200 written, due in 7 days. Pace = ceil(3,800 ÷ 7) = 543 words/day.
Frequently asked questions
How long should I leave for editing?
At least 20% of the timeline. For a 10-day project, write for 8, edit for 2.
Realistic daily output?
First drafts: 500-2,000 words/hr at sustained writing. Academic writing with citations: 200-500/hr.
What about writer's block days?
Add 1 buffer day per week. Better to finish a day early than scramble.
