Cost Per Credit Hour Calculator
Calculate cost per credit hour from total tuition and credits — including fees and books.
What this calculates
Sticker price tells you per-semester or per-year tuition; cost per credit tells you what each class actually costs. This is the right unit to compare schools, programs, and online vs in-person options.
Formula & how it works
Cost per credit = (tuition + fees + books) / credit_hours. Cost per class = cost_per_credit × credits_per_class.
Worked example
$15,000 tuition + $1,200 fees + $500 books for 15 credits. Cost per credit = $16,700 / 15 = $1,113. A 3-credit class costs $3,340.
Frequently asked questions
In-state vs out-of-state?
Public schools charge ~3× more for out-of-state. Always compare in-state vs in-state and out vs out.
Online cheaper?
Often, but not always. Some 'online' programs charge the same as in-person; some charge premium tech fees.
Hidden costs?
Lab fees, parking, health insurance, housing, dining all add up. Cost per credit on tuition alone understates by 30-100%.
