Brick & Block Calculator (Count Per Wall)
Calculate the number of bricks or concrete blocks needed for a wall, with mortar allowance.
What this calculates
Standard modular brick (with 3/8" mortar joint) takes about 7 bricks per square foot of wall. Standard 8 × 8 × 16 concrete block takes 1.125 blocks per square foot. This calculator multiplies by wall area and adds a waste allowance for breakage and cuts.
Formula & how it works
Wall area = length × height. Bricks = area × 7. Blocks = area × 1.125. Add 5-10% waste for cuts and breakage.
Worked example
Wall 30 × 8 ft = 240 sq ft. Modular brick: 240 × 7 × 1.05 = 1,764. 8" block: 240 × 1.125 × 1.05 = 284.
Frequently asked questions
Different brick sizes?
Queen 6/sf, jumbo 4.5/sf, Roman 6.5/sf. Modular (US standard) is 7/sf for face brick.
Mortar needed?
About 7 bags per 1,000 modular brick (3/8" joint). For blocks, 3-4 bags per 100 blocks.
Single vs double wythe?
This calculates one wythe (single course). Double the count for two-wythe walls.
