Towing Capacity & Payload Calculator
Check if your trailer fits within tow rating, payload, and tongue weight limits.
What this calculates
A vehicle's tow rating isn't the only limit — payload (people + cargo + tongue weight) and tongue weight percentage matter just as much. Exceeding any one is unsafe and may void warranty/insurance. This calculator checks all three for trailer-pulling decisions.
Formula & how it works
Tongue weight = trailer × 10-15% (conventional) or 20-25% (fifth-wheel). Effective payload used = passengers + cargo + tongue. Check: trailer ≤ tow rating AND used payload ≤ payload capacity.
Worked example
Truck tow rating 11,000 lb, payload 1,700 lb. Trailer 7,500 lb at 12% tongue = 900 lb tongue. 3 passengers (510) + cargo (200) + tongue (900) = 1,610 lb used. ✅ Under both limits.
Frequently asked questions
Where to find ratings?
Tow rating: owner's manual + door jamb. Payload: 'Cargo + occupants' on the yellow door jamb sticker (each vehicle is unique).
Why does tongue weight matter?
Too little (<10%) causes sway. Too much (>15% conventional) overloads rear axle and lifts front wheels — bad steering and braking.
Weight distribution hitch?
Required by many manufacturers above 5,000 lb. It transfers tongue weight forward, restoring steering geometry.
